How to Plan a Wedding at The Wedding Tree in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Written by, Sierra Laine Photography LLC

The Wedding Tree is one of the most sought-after ceremony locations in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and for good reason. Tucked into the Bridger-Teton National Forest, this intimate ceremony site offers sweeping views of the Grand Tetons, a peaceful forest setting, and a sense of quiet seclusion that feels deeply intentional.

For couples planning a small wedding, micro wedding, or elopement in Jackson Hole, The Wedding Tree offers a rare balance of accessibility, privacy, and natural beauty. Below is everything you should know about planning a wedding at The Wedding Tree, from booking logistics to timeline considerations and photography tips.

What Is The Wedding Tree in Jackson Hole?

The Wedding Tree is a designated ceremony site located in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, just outside of Jackson Hole. It is not a traditional venue with buildings or amenities, but rather a scenic outdoor location centered around an iconic tree that is two trees joined at the base, overlooking the Tetons.

Because it is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, weddings at The Wedding Tree require advance planning and permits. This helps preserve the land while still allowing couples to celebrate in one of the most beautiful places in Wyoming.

The Wedding Tree is ideal for couples who value simplicity, intention, and connection to nature over traditional wedding structures.

How to Book The Wedding Tree for Your Wedding

To host a wedding ceremony at The Wedding Tree, you will need a special use permit from the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Here is how the process generally works:

  1. Submit a special use permit application through the Bridger-Teton National Forest
  2. Choose your preferred date and time (Requests must be received at least 30 days prior to the event date. Large or complex events may require more than 30 days to process)
  3. .Pay the required permit fee ($300)
  4. Wait for official approval before finalizing vendors

Permits are limited and dates can book quickly, especially during peak wedding season from June through September. It is recommended to apply as early as possible.

Because this is public land, booking The Wedding Tree does not reserve the entire area exclusively, but the site is respected by visitors and is commonly left undisturbed during ceremonies. It is also booked on a first come first serve basis. You can view all the information here.

Guest Count and Wedding Size

The Wedding Tree is best suited for elopements and micro weddings. Most ceremonies work best with small groups, generally under 30 guests. However, you can fit up to 75 guests.

Please keep in mind that the parking situation is SMALL. Encourage your guests to carpool as only about 7 cars can fit in the pull off. Hiring a shuttle service is a great idea for this location!

Best Time of Year for a Wedding Tree Wedding

The most popular months for weddings at The Wedding Tree are June through October.

Seasonal considerations include:

  • Early summer brings wildflowers and lingering snow on the Tetons
  • Mid-summer offers longer daylight and warmer temperatures
  • Early fall provides cooler air and golden tones
  • Winter time you may have to snowshoe in but it is accessible.

Weather in Jackson Hole can change quickly, even in summer. Wind, sudden temperature drops, and afternoon storms are all possible. Planning flexible timelines and layered attire is always recommended.

*PLEASE NOTE*

There is something called Smoke Season out here. Wildfires can run rampant in the summer months, causing smoke to build up and cover the Tetons. If you want to plan your wedding day to not conflict with this time frame, Smoke Season tends to run from July to Mid-September (but can vary depending on the year.)

Ceremony Timing and Light Considerations

Evening ceremonies are especially popular at The Wedding Tree due to softer light and calmer conditions. Late afternoon and early evening tend to offer the most flattering light for photography and a more peaceful atmosphere overall.

Morning ceremonies are also beautiful and often quieter, especially during peak tourist months.

Because The Wedding Tree does not allow permanent décor or structures, the natural light and landscape play a major role in how the ceremony feels.

What You Can and Cannot Bring

Since The Wedding Tree is located on protected public land, there are guidelines couples must follow.

Generally allowed:

  • Handheld bouquets (though some fresh flowers are not allowed in the National Parks and Forests, i.e. Babies Breath, due to being invasive)
  • Simple, temporary décor
  • Personal vow books or Bibles
  • Lightweight chairs, if permitted
  • Acoustic Music

Typically not allowed:

  • Permanent installations
  • Arches attached to the ground or tree
  • Aisle runners
  • Confetti, petals, or rice
  • Amplified sound

Your permit will outline specific rules, and working with experienced vendors helps ensure everything stays compliant.

Planning Your Reception After the Ceremony

Because The Wedding Tree is ceremony-only, couples must choose a separate location for their celebration afterward.

Popular options include:

  • Reservations at a Jackson Hole Restaurant
  • Intimate Lodge, Cabin or Rental Home dinner with a Private Chef
  • Restaurant buyouts in Jackson Hole
  • Reception at the National Museum of Wildlife Art
  • Live Music & Dancing at The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar

This approach allows couples to enjoy the best of both worlds: a breathtaking ceremony location and a comfortable, meaningful space to gather afterward.

Photography Tips for The Wedding Tree

The Wedding Tree is incredibly photogenic, but it does require thoughtful planning.

Helpful tips include:

  • Plan portraits before or after the ceremony to avoid crowding
  • Consider nearby locations such as Schwabacher Landing, Mormon Row, or Glacier View Turnout
  • Build in buffer time for travel between locations
  • Keep timelines flexible to work with weather and light

An experienced Jackson Hole wedding photographer will help guide location choices, timing, and flow to ensure your day feels unrushed and natural.

Is The Wedding Tree Right for You?

The Wedding Tree is perfect for couples who:

  • Want an intimate, meaningful ceremony
  • Value natural beauty over traditional venues
  • Are comfortable with outdoor conditions
  • Appreciate simplicity and intention

If you are dreaming of a wedding day that feels grounded, peaceful, and deeply personal, The Wedding Tree offers an unforgettable setting to begin your marriage.

*Please Note* There are no bathrooms on site, so depending on personal needs, this may not be the best fit for some couples.
